Dear Potential Facilitator,

My name is Vivian Lu, and I am currently the Vice President of the Vietnamese American High School Alliance (VAHSA), which is UVSA’s high school organization. This year I am co-chairing the 21st annual Little Saigon Clean-Up with VAHSA’s Social Activities Chair, Kevin Le! Yes, we are bringing it back since the event has been in such high demand among high school students in our community! But…we can’t do it alone! We need your help!

What is the Little Saigon Clean-Up?

The Little Saigon Clean Up was first hosted in 1993 by the Vietnamese American Coalition (VAC) at UC Irvine in order to change Little Saigon’s reputation at the time as being one of the top ten dirtiest tourist attractions in Orange County (OC Register). Since then, VAC has been hosting the event annually and the tradition continues today, serving as a reminder of how much Little Saigon has evolved since 1993. VAC at UCI has disbanded as of 2013. UVSA’s high school branch, VAHSA, is looking to pick up where VAC left off so that the Little Saigon Clean-Up can continue to be a traditional event among the Vietnamese American youth community.

Why help?

This event has greater purpose for both college and high school students involved. It allows them the opportunity to learn about their community, to take initiative, friendship and most importantly, where they will learn about their inner strength and resiliency which lies at the heart of the Vietnamese American people. Through a simple and humble gesture of cleaning up litter, students are given opportunities to make connections with the community so that they can reach their highest potentials as productive and caring citizens.
